Cleaning a Shower Curtain

Executive summary about Shower Curtain by April Reinhardt

Cleaning a shower curtain is easier to do than you might think. If your house has a bathtub with a shower nozzle fixture, chances are that you have some type of shower curtain. Usually made of vinyl, inner shower curtain liners take daily abuse, and must be cleaned often to prevent mold and mildew growth. There are two methods for cleaning a shower curtain liner:

1. Put your shower curtain liner in your clothes-washing machine, and fill the machine with cool water. When the load is finished, remove the liner from the machine and hang outside to dry.

2. Another effective method for cleaning a shower curtain liner is to leave it on its rings and spray it liberally with a mildew cleaner specifically formulated for bathroom use. Allow the cleaner to work for the time recommended on the product label, and then rinse the liner clean.

Never dry a plastic shower curtain in the dryer, as it could melt from the high heat. To prevent growth of mold and mildew, always draw the curtain across the length of the rails to allow it to air dry between showers.

1. Quality bath linens are made from combed long staple 100% cotton. Looped towels are more absorbent.
2. 100% cotton towels do not shed as much as inexpensive towels.
3. Bath linens are available in a wide range of sizes. You don't have to buy bath linens in sets. If you only use bath towels, don't bother with hand towels. If you find the perfect color match for your bath decor, buy extras.

4 Tips to Preserve Your Sheets and Towels

1. Wash weekly and rotate. Be sure to use only non-chlorine bleach on colored sheets, and bleach white sheets only when absolutely necessary. Over time, chlorine bleach weakens fabric fibers. Tumble dry, or dry sheets in the sun to further increase the whitening effect.

2. Drying sheets and towels in separate loads. This reduces drying time and allows fabrics to dry more evenly.

3. Tumble dry on a medium heat setting, and remove your sheets promptly from the dryer to reduce wrinkling.

4. When laundering towels, machine wash in warm water with similar colors. Always wash dark colors separately, and avoid chlorine bleach. Tumble drying will enhance the softness of your towels. Remove dry towels promptly from your dryer, shake them out, and fold.
